2027 Benefits Improvements
Your Medical Savings Goes Further
- We’re increasing the Option A Medical Savings allocation from 15% to 20%.
- Meaning more of your contribution is available in your Medical Savings Account for eligible day-to-day healthcare expenses.
Virtual GP Consultations
- Not every GP visit needs to happen at a practice.
- SAMWUMED is introducing virtual GP consultations, enabling members to consult by phone or computer from anywhere.
- Option A members: 8 virtual GP visits per beneficiary per year paid from risk after MSA is depleted, Option B members: up to 12.
More Out-of-Area GP Visits
- Option A members will receive three funded out-of-area GP visits per year, up from two, and Option B members will receive eight, up from two, when travelling or temporarily outside their network area.
A Fairer Start for Late Joiners
- We’ve waived the late-joiner penalty age threshold to under 46 years.
- This reduces the penalty burden for older first-time joiners and makes joining SAMWUMED more accessible.
Additional Antidepressant Funding
- Mental health is part of overall health.
- Option B members will receive additional funding for second line antidepressant medication, providing greater support for ongoing treatment.
Continuous Glucose Monitoring
- For a child living with Type 1 diabetes, keeping track of blood sugar is part of everyday life.
- SAMWUMED will now fund Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) devices and consumables for beneficiaries under 18, helping families monitor glucose levels more easily and manage diabetes with greater confidence.
Pregnancy brings changing physical and emotional needs. Our improved maternity benefits support the whole journey, not just the medical check-ups.

More Childhood Vaccines
- Vaccines help protect children from serious illnesses that can be prevented.
- SAMWUMED will now fund additional private-schedule vaccines, including, MMR, Meningococcal, Hepatitis A and Chickenpox.
Two Doses Per Lifetime
- Pneumococcal disease can cause serious infections, including pneumonia and meningitis.
- SAMWUMED is increasing funding from one to two pneumococcal vaccine doses per lifetime for eligible beneficiaries.
Bone Density from Age 65 for Men
- Bone strength becomes increasingly important as we age.
- SAMWUMED is lowering the age for bone-density cover for men from 70 to 65, helping identify potential bone-health concerns earlier.
OTC Medicines: No Daily Sublimit
- Option B members will no longer have the R250 daily sublimit on over-the-counter medicines.
- This gives members greater flexibility when managing everyday health needs.
